THOUSANDS of Pangasinan farmers witnessed the lowering of the time capsule signaling the start of construction of the P196 million Modern Rice Processing Complex at the provincial nursery compound in barangay Tebag, Sta. Barbara .
The ground breaking ceremony was attended by the Korean government thru the Korea International Cooperating Agency (KOICA) resident Kim In, together with Secretary Arthur Yap of the Department of Agriculture and provincial government officials led by Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. They signed the memorandum of agreement which contains the responsibilities of the signatories for the project.
The state-of-the-art post harvest facilities will serve as a one-stop shop for milling, drying and storing, thus, helping reduce post-harvest losses. It will also enhance higher production and increase the income of farmers. Read the rest of this entry »
SAN MANUEL — Finally, the long dream of farmers in Pangasinan for greater economic prosperity has come closer to being realized with the groundbreaking on Thursday of the much-anticipated multi-billion peso irrigation component of the San Roque Multi-Purpose Dam Project (SRMDP).
The project, initially costing P4.5 billion financed by a loan secured by the government from China’s Import and Expor Bank, is a giant re-regulating pond just below SRMDP, capable of impounding five million cubic meters of water at one time.
The structure will catch all the water being discharged by the high dam while in the process of generating power, estimated at 411 megawatts, instead of just flowing downstream of the Agno River before emptying into Lingayen Gulf. Read the rest of this entry »

SAN MANUEL — The province of Pangasinan will always be under the threat of flood every rainy season unless the government provides stronger dikes downstream of the San Roque Dam in San Manuel town.
This was according to officials of the San Roque Power Corporation (SRPC) and the National Power Corporation (NPC) who, on Monday, briefed officials of Dagupan City who wanted to be assured that no more big flood like what happened last October could occur again.
To recall, the government launched a few years back the three-phase multi-billion peso Agno and Allied Rivers Urgent Rehabilitation Project (AARURP) but only Phases I and II are still in place. Read the rest of this entry »
OPPOSITION Sen. Chiz Escudero yesterday declared that it is not time for him to run for the presidency but vowed at the same time that he would continue his fight for good governance.
“Napagpasyahan ko, na hindi tumakbo bilang pangulo sa darating na halalan. Napagpasyahan ko na hindi man bilang kandidato, ako’y may papel na pwedeng gampanan bilang Pilipino at ordinaryong botante sa panahong ito,” the 40-year old lawmaker said in a speech at Club Filipino.

SOME 3,500 land titles were awarded over the weekend to aging recipients in Mangaldan and Manaoag who have waited long for this government award to them over the weekendover lands they have tilled and virtually occupied.

LINGAYEN — The provincial government under Gov. Amado T. Espino turned over on Tuesday brand new hand-held radios and wireless telephone units to the province’s 1,333 barangay captains.
Included among the recipients, during a turn-over rite at the Narciso Ramos Civic and Sports Center here, are chiefs of police from 44 towns and three cities of Pangasinan.

LINGAYEN —- Another honor was tucked onto the belt of Pangasinan when it bagged the “Garantisadong Pambata National Champion for 2009 in the recent awarding ceremony held at Puerto Princesa in Palawan.
Dr. Ferdinand A. Totaan, Provincial Health Office officer-in-charge together with Milagros A. Guttierez, GP provincial coordinator received the trophy and a check amounting to P300,000 as monetary award.

THE schools division of San Carlos City bagged the top post in the 20th Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) Regional Meet held from November 27 to 29 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) with 88 gold medals, 36 silver medals and 28 bronze medals. ]
Dagupan City came in second with 59 gold medals, 31silver medals and 32 bronze medals while Laoag City garnered 23 gold medals, 62 silver medals and 38 bronze medals at third spot.
Most of the medals bagged by the champion division came from the athletic events and chess while Dagupan City dominated the basketball, taekwondo, lawn tennis, table- tennis and volleyball events. THE San Roque multi-purpose dam can already meet all its requirements for the year when the water level reaches 280 meters above sea level (masl) during the rainy season, an official of the National Power Corporation disclosed Tuesday.
Guesting at the weekly Pantongtongan Tayo radio program of the Philippine Information Agency over Radyo ng Bayan-DZMQ, flood forecasting and warning division chief Virgilio Garcia said the waters stored at the dam at that level are enough to generate power and to serve the irrigation needs of Pangasinan farmers.
