TEN outstanding public schools teachers of the city were cited and awarded in formal rites at the Dagupan City Astrodome in recognition of their diligence and hardwork.
Dubbed as the “Matalunggaring Ya Maestro/Maestra Award”, the ceremonies featured the cream of the crop among teachers from grade school to high school.
Named outstanding grade school teachers were Maricel Maramba (Grade 1), Melba Paras (Grade II), Generosa Festejo (Grade III), Erwina F. Camagay (Grade 1V), Renato D. Benitez (Grade V) and Manuel Ferrer (Grade VI). SOMEBODY, actually a media colleague now semi-retired from the hustle and bustle of newsgathering, once told us a long time ago –and perhaps rather exaggeratedly – that eastern Pangasinan politicians are “friendly on the outside but deadly on the inside.”
Eastern Pangasinan of course means that territorial jurisdiction starting from and beyond Urdaneta City in the north and from Alcala and beyond in the south.
At the time, we were still establishing our initial contacts and friendship with some of the earlier officials (a dwindling number of them are still around) in that part of the province as a neophyte newsman and was naturally wide-eyed and gushing at the local leaders’ generous nature and warm camaraderie to the Press in general. SAN CARLOS CITY — Mayor Julian “Jolly” V. Resuello delivered his eighth and last State of the City Address (SOCA) as incumbent city executive last Monday at the City Gymnasium here, focusing on the vast transformation of the city during his term, especially in the areas of peace and order, tourism and commerce and trade.
Speaking before department heads and employees of the city government, Sangguniang Panlungsod members led by City Vice-Mayor Julier C. Resuello, and staffs of different line agencies, civic, professional, religious and business associations, judges, prosecutors, barangay workers and the media, Resuello bared his administration’s socio-economic and political gains for the past eight and one-half years.

THE police have “cleared” a provincial board member of any involvement in illegal drugs after being tagged in a local tabloid report as “father of illegal drug pushers in the 5th district of Pangasinan.”
Chief Inspector Noel Espinoza, chief of the Provincial Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operation Task Group (PAIDSOTG) of the Police Provincial Office (PPO), said nowhere in their list of drug personalities is the name of Board Member Danilo Uy.

LINGAYEN – Two more persons drowned in separate areas of the Lingayen Gulf recently swelling the number of swimmers who lost their lives in local beaches since December last year.
The latest drowning incidents occurred at the Jimenez beach in barangay Patar, Bolinao on Wednesday. The victim was identified in the police report as Cheffrey Partho, 26, of Imus, Cavite.
The other drowning victim was Tealby Pascual, 14, of barangay Matalava, Lingayen, who was carried by strong currents while swimming along the Lingayen Beach last December 30.

THE Philippine Press Institute (PPI) has announced a training program for media practitioners on Avian Influenza, also commonly known as bird flu.
The new program, PPI said, follows the previous success of the Institute and the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) partnership in ‘bringing children rights and welfare to the fore.’
The workshop, which is part of the Stay Bird Flu Philippines Communication Campaign, will include lecture-discussions on Avian Influenza and Pandemic Influenza, skills enhancement on writing about AI and bird watching activity (Olanggo Island for the Visayas and Candaba Swamps for Luzon).

THE city council of Dagupan played Santa Claus to some 600 regular employees of the city government when it finally granted on Monday their long delayed P1,000 per month additional compensation allowance (adcom) retroactive April this year.
City Vice Mayor Alvin Fernandez, the presiding officer, said each employee will receive adcom of P9,000 each up to the end of December this year.
The adcom is based on the executive order of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo that initially benefited state workers. If local government units can afford to give it, they too can extend the benefit to their workers. Read the rest of this entry »
A FILIPINO-AMERICAN doctor donated last Saturday a high-technology equipment called bronchoscope, costing half a million pesos, to the Region 1 Medical Center here.
Dr. Pedro Dayrit, a gastroenterologist, who works at the Memorial Hospital in Salem County, New Jersey and at the St. Francis Hospital in Delaware, handed over the modern medical equipment to R1MC officials led by Dr. Jesus T. Canto, hospital director.
Dayrit is married to Dr. Elmina Margarita Fernandez, a neurologist, daughter of Immigration Commissioner and Mrs. Alipio Fernandez of Dagupan City. The couple are both U.S.- based.

THE Dagupan City government spearheaded a tie-up project with the Phil-Japan Gijutsu Iten Foundation, Inc (PJGIFI) for an orientation and training for Dagupeños who wish to work in Japan.
More than a hundred applicants from Dagupan and other towns in Pangasinan attended the on-the-dot orientation for Japan job aspirants held at the Dagupan Business Center, Astrodome building.

THE Commission on Election is not satisfied with the turnout of voter’s registration nationwide.
This was revealed by Dagupan City Election Officer Remarque Ravanzo who said that the poll body has come up with a measure to remedy the situation.
Ravanzo, a lawyer, said the Commission has promulgated Comelec Resolution No. 7684 ordering the conduct of registration on Sundays in offices of election officers nationwide, including three municipalities in the National Capital Region. Read the rest of this entry »
