LINGAYEN — Athletes from Southern Mindanao (Davao Region XI) dominated the opening day of the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) national games here on Monday, garnering five gold medals.

The weeklong sports competition is held at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center here.

Region 4-A (Southern Tagalog) won three golds to trail Southern Mindanao in the medal standing.

Region XI won the shot put for men and women, the 1,500 meter run for men and women and the 1,500 meter run for men.

Region 6 (Western Visayas) and Region 4-A (Southern Tagalog) share the lead in swimming with 11 points apiece for as many gold medals each in the swimming event in the Private Schools Athletic Association national games.

The swimming competition was held at Dagupan City’s the Olympic-size swimming pool built by the Philippine Tourism Authority in 1995 for the Palarong Pambansa which was turned over to the city of Dagupan later.

Western Visayas’ female swimmers amassed six golds and its five male swimmers five golds. These were the same outputs snatched by female and male swimmers, respectively, of Southern Tagalog.

LINGAYEN – Athletic delegations from the different regions of the country have start arriving here for this year’s Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) national games which opens tomorrow in this capital town.

Dr. Gonzalo T. Duque, PRISAA national president, said the event secretariat has started distributing the different delegates to their billeting areas located here and in neighboring Binmaley and Dagupan City.

Some 4,000 athletes, coaches and school officials from various parts of the country are expected to take part in the athletic competition, which will run from February 6-11, 2005.

The province of Pangasinan will showcase its bangus (milkfish), mangoes, bagoong (salted fish) and bucayo (coconut candy) in the Private Schools Athletic Association PRISAA) national games which reels off  Feb 6 to 12.

Dr. Gonzalo Duque, president of the national PRISAA and of the Dagupan-based Lyceum-Northwestern University, said the national meet offers the Pangasinenses opportunities to promote their native products to the 4,500 athletes and their coaches from 16 regions throughout the country.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will keynote the opening of the week-long meet during a program at 10:00 a.m. at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen.

4,000 young athletes compete in 8th Milo Little Olympics

LINGAYEN – Some 4,000 young athletes from the elementary and high schools in four regions of the country will see action in the 8th Milo Little Olympics for Luzon on Aug. 20, 21, 27 and 28.

Tess Bernardino, Milo sports organizer for Regions I, II, III and the Cordillera Administrative Region, said the opening ceremony for this sporting event was held here Friday with Rep. Amado Espino, Jr. leading the torch lighting along with Department of Education Assistant Secretary Teodoro Catindig and Pat Goc Ong, Milo sports executive.
She said the athletes will go for medals in 11 sporting events, namely athletics, badminton, chess, football, gymnastics, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and volleyball.

The athletes will come from the Ilocos, Central Luzon, Cagayan Valley and Cordilleras.
All the events will be held at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen except for gymnastics which will be held at the CSI The City Mall in Dagupan City, football at the provincial headquarters of the Philippine National Police, and table tennis either at St. Columban College or at the Pangasinan School of Arts and Trade (PSAT).

Bernardo said the yearly sporting event is a project of Nestle Philippines, Inc., maker of Milo chocolate drink, in cooperation with the province of Pangasinan, the Philippine Olympics Committee, and the Department of Education offices from all participating regions. (PNA)
