ALAMINOS CITY – Former Tour Pilipinas 2nd runner-up Erickson Obosa, 28, of Manaoag won the 200-kilometer Tour of Pangasinan (Pichay Cup) the other day after he unleashed a finishing kick in the last 300-meters to outsprint four breakaway partners to rule the Pistay Dayat Cycling classic last Tuesday, May 1.

Obosa received the championship trophy from Mayor Hernani Braganza, civic leader Boying Palafox of Bani, Pangasinan and Jason Velasco, who represented Congressman Prospero Pichay, businessman Oscar Angeles and race director Jesus Garcia during the awarding rites at the city auditorium here. NAGA CITY – Sixteen-year-old sprinter Rhemilyn Soriano of Laoac snared the first gold medal for Team Pangasinan as the Palarong Pambansa shifted to high gear last week at the sprawling sports stadium here.

Soriano easily breezed to the finish line in the 100-meter race finals, beating her closest rival from Western Visayas.

The young sprinter from Laoac National High School also bagged silver in the long jump, just minutes after she grabbed her first gold.

Soriano could have won the gold in that event had she not been obliged to run in the 200-meter finals scheduled just before the long jump event. She was still panting when her turn to make the long jump came.

ONE of the summer surprises included in the city’s celebration of Bangus Festival 2006 is the staging Beach Volleyball Championship Games that involves lots of action and spiking on white sand on April 27 to May 1 at the City Plaza.

Mayor Benjamin Lim will lead the ceremonial serve during the opening ceremony at 8 am to formally open the competition.

According to Manny Gatchallan, chairman of the event, top-rate volleyball teams from universities and colleges in Manila were invited to participate in the event such as the University of the Philippines, University of Sto. Tomas, Far Eastern University, Lyceum of the Philippines University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Dela Salle –St. Benilde College, PATTS University of Aeronautics, St. Louis University and University of Cordilleras.

Central Visayas won eight golds to dominate lat Friday’s swimming event in the Private Schools Athletic Association national games held at Dagupan’s Olympic-size swimming pool.

It was challenged in the pool however by western Visayas which won in five swimming events.

Central Visayas earned its victories when Todd Aris Belleza, Ian Rusiana, Andrie Yosef Ynclino and Andrew Dequina snatched the golds in the 200-meter relay.

LINGAYEN — Defending champion Western Visayas (WV) has retained the championship crown for the 2006 Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) national games here.

WV wrapped up the weeklong sports competition by winning two taekwondo events at the CSI City Mall in Dagupan City while its women’s team bagged the gold in the women’s volleyball, collecting 70 golds, 72 silvers and 59 bronze medals.

Heavyweight jin Miguel Ruiz of the University of La Salle in Bacolod City disposed of his opponent while Catherine Samonte of Riverside College also overpowered her opponent to give Western Visayas two more golds in the homestretch of the PRISAA event.

LINGAYEN — Host Ilocos Region ruled in 24 events, nine of them held Thursday afternoon, to win the championship in athletics but it remains fifth in the overall standing, still trailing fourth-running Southern Tagalog.

The final tally in athletics released at 12 noon Friday showed Ilocos region bagging 24 golds, 26 silvers and four bronzes.

“I was surprised but happy with this phenomenal performance by our boys and girls in athletics,” said Dr. Gonzalo T. Duque, president of the Ilocos Region PRISAA and of Lyceum-Northwestern University in Dagupan City.

LINGAYEN — Western Visayas padded its medal haul to 46 golds after ruling in Thursday’s 23 events, mostly in swimming, to erect a commanding lead with two more days to go in the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) national games here.

Athletes of Western Visayas made swimming a virtual gold mine when they collected 30 golds of the 60 golds at stake, then went on to win 12 golds in athletics and ruled in four badminton events to widen its lead in the 16-region national games.

Swimmers Kristin Cabasac of Iloilo City and Nianhlyn Acain accounted for two golds each when they combined in the 400 individual medley along with Angela Luz Tuble and Rheza Gonzales, and won each in the 400-meter free style and in the 200-meter individual medley.

LINGAYEN — Western Visayas took the lead in the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) national games from erstwhile leader Southern Tagalog, accumulating 18 golds, 23 silvers and 13 golds after three days of competition.

Southern Tagalog was relegated to second place in the temporary medal standing with 16 golds, eight silvers and 10 bronzes with its lone victory on Wednesday in the men’s 400-meter dash.

But the biggest surprise of them all at the Narciso Ramos Sports Center here was host Ilocos region when it garnered 15 golds, nine silvers and two bronzes to place itself in contention for the lead.
