CAMP OSCAR FLORENDO, La Union,–Fifty-six vintage bombs, believed parts of a Japanese arsenal in World War II, were dug up near the house of a municipal mayor of La Union on Wednesday.
Police operatives and members of the Regional Explosive Ordinance Division of Police Regional Office 1 immediately rushed to sitio Pao, barangay Sobredillo in Caba, La Union where the vintage bombs were dug up.

VIGAN CITY—Murder and frustrated murder charges were filed before the provincial prosecution office against a barangay chairman tagged as the principal suspect in the slaying of one person and wounding of another in a shooting incident in barangay Pug-os, Sinait, Ilocos Sur.
The suspect, Barangay Captain Marion Ines of Pug-os in Sinait, is now the subject of an intensive police manhunt.

CABUGAO, Ilocos Sur—A multi-million peso water system built solely by the municipal government here is now ready to bring potable water supply to thousands of households in 14 big barangays including the Poblacion.
Cabugao Mayor Diocaesar Suero said on Tuesday the water system, including its pipeline was set to open last Friday.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union—Though the problem of insurgency was almost nil in 2007, many sensational crimes nevertheless rocked the region, causing so much concern among the population.
Victims of the sensational crimes that hogged the pages of newspapers included two mayors, a vice mayor, one councilor, three lawyers, a priest and a municipal treasurer.
The major murders reconfirmed public apprehension that there are still too many loose guns in the hands of the civilian population in the four provinces of Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.

BANTAY, Ilocos Sur – The president of the thousands of volunteer health workers in Ilocos region has announced that newly elected barangay officials are barred from removing a Barangay Health Worker (BHW).
Zenaida Pulido, president of the Federated BHWs in Region One, said that the services being rendered by a BHW are purely voluntary in nature.

GREGORIO DEL PILAR, Ilocos Sur – The 10th anniversary of the Battle of Tirad Pass here was recalled on Sunday with hundreds of people trekking uphill to reach the exact site where General Gregorio del Pilar and his men made a gallant stand against advancing American troops in the Filipino-American War.
The commemoration was joined by Bulakenos, some of them national historians, students and tourists who came all the way here to pay homage to their provincemate, General del Pilar, who died a hero’s death in that battle at the age of 24.

MANILA — Sen. Aquilino Pimentel Jr. told journalists recently that he was amenable to a voluntary right of reply adopted by media.
Speaking at a Right of Reply Forum organized by the PPI Press Council at the Century Park hotel, Pimentel noted that government already had so many problems in its hands.
