TYPHOON Frank, expected to hit Dagupan City and other populated areas of central Pangasinan as of 8 pm. Sunday, did a sudden shift in direction towards Dasol in western Pangasinan and instead blew hardly inland but along the coasts of western Pangasinan and out to the South China Sea thru Cape Bolinao by yesterday, Monday.

This bit of explanation from the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Sciences Administration (Pag-asa) appeared to show why despite the agency’s own dire warnings about the typhoon heading toward the city’s and central Pangasinan’s earlier battered areas, not much wind struck Dagupan and immediate areas Sunday evening. SIXTEEN persons were hospitalized for food poisoning after partaking of food served in banquets for two weddings Sunday night at the Star Plaza Hotel in Dagupan.

Seven persons who participated in a wedding reception attended by 228 at the first floor of the hotel were brought to the Nazareth General Hospital.

Nine others who ate at another banquet attended by 120 people at the hotel’s upper floor were also rushed to the Pangasinan Medical Center. Read the rest of this entry »

FORTY MILLION pesos worth of medical equipments, supplies and medicines donated by Cardinal Santos Medical Center have been turned over to the provincial government of Pangasinan on June 19 at the Capitol Plaza in Lingayen, supporting the medical needs of typhoon “Cosme” victims and boosting the vision of Gov. Amafo T. Espino Jr. to make public hospitals competitive with the private hospitals.

During the turnover ceremony, the items of the first of three batches of deliveries were turned over to the provincial government of Pangasinan thru the Eastern Pangasinan Filipino0-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry President and the concurrent Abono partylist Chairman, Engr. Rosendo M. So.

SAN CARLOS CITY - Miss Magic 2008 Kris Allaine Crisulo, and Limgas na Pangasinan 2nd runner-up Marilee dela Cruz, both nurses and natives of this city, will help the administration of their City Mayor Julier “Ayoy” Resuello in its various medical missions and health outreach programs.

TOUGH as nails and turning a century old in December, this year, Dionisio Datuin Mendoza received a special citation as Dagupan City’s oldest citizen during the celebration of the city’s 61st founding anniversary.

Relatives and barangaymates proudly witnessed the ceremony last Friday where “Mama Isio” received some P3,500 in cash gift and other assorted giveaways from the city government led by
Mayor Alipio Fernandez, Jr. and Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez.

THE provincial government has released the midyear bonus of some 2,678 regular and casual employees amounting to over P29 million.

Provincial Budget Officer Hilaria J. Claveria said those entitled to the compensation were the chiefs of offices, rank and file personnel and casual employees who are assigned in various offices and hospitals under the provincial government.

Claveria added that the amount constituted 50 percent of the monthly basic salary of each employee depending on their corresponding monthly rates. Read the rest of this entry »

THE Dagupan City Water District (DCW) has deferred its plan to adjust the water rate here originally scheduled to start July 1, 2008.

DCWD General Manager Ramon Reyna said the water district deferred to the city council to postpone the water rate adjustment due to the impact of the past typhoon Cosme as well as the deepening economic crisis not only in Dagupan but the entire country. Read the rest of this entry »

BINMALEY—Reconstruction and rehabilitation of schools damaged by typhoon Cosme stopped last week here when the town mayor noticed substandard materials being used by the Department of Education (DepEd) contractors.

Mayor Simplicio Rosario said he ordered a half to the reconstruction of the de-roofed Binmaley North Elementary School and the Binmaley Central Elementary School when he noted that 9 millimeter steel bars were being used by the contractors as reinforcement of the roofbeams. LINGAYEN—Rep. Victor Agbayani of the second district of Pangasinan revealed many proposals in Congress aimed at helping the people, especially the poor, overcome the present deepening economic crisis brought about by the continuing increase in the prices of oil and energy.

Among the major ones, Agbayani said, is the suspension and or reduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT) for power and fuel and the third is not just to suspend or remove the VAT but to remove the VAT on those two commodities.

The fourth, said Agbayani is to continue with the VAT but the surplus revenue earned by the government must be used to subsidize some commodities in order to ease the impact of the economic crisis upon the people. Read the rest of this entry »

CLASSES have finally opened last Monday in two public elementary schools in Dagupan some of whose classrooms were destroyed by typhoon Cosme.

The Pantal Elementary School as well as the East Central Elementary School were delayed in their opening to give way to the repair of some of their buildings blown down by howlers.

City Schools Superintendent Aurora Domingo said the two schools were opened even as repair of damaged school houses in the two schools are still going on.

She said classes had to be divided into two shifts utilizing the few available classrooms.

All the other public schools in Dagupan opened on June 10, except the two schools.
