CHAIRMAN Thompson Lantion of the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) admitted that he sees no need for a fare increase next year among public buses and jeepneys if oil companies will continue to roll back prices of petroleum products as the small players among them have begun doing.
In a talk to newsmen here, Lantion announced that the independent oil players have just rolled back their prices and he hopes that the big players will follow soon.

MORE than 40 priests of the Lingayen-Dagupan Archdiocese will refrain from officiating wedding ceremonies in all churches until after they have complied with a state law covering such priestly functions

CITY Hall is bracing for a possible legal battle as an offshoot of the executive order issued by Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. directing the immediate cancellation of tax declaration certificates (TDCs) issued over parcels of foreshore or public lands along the beaches of the city’s Tondaligan Park, especially in barangay Bonuan Binloc.
Holders of these tax declarations, most of them prominent families and businessmen, are expected to go to court in order to protect their rights although they know that tax declarations are mere proof of payment of taxes and not proof lf land ownership.

THOUSANDS of coastal residents in the Ilocos were evacuated when giant waves spawned by the north-east wind surge fanned by the exiting Super Typhoon ‘Mina’ in the south China Sea, battered and destroyed their houses.

Fil-Chinese businessmen express grave concern
ALARMED businessmen and rich families in Dagupan City have asked the police to step up its monitoring and counter-measures against kidnap-for-ransom gangs believed to have descended anew in the city after a long spell.

THE city government of Dagupan is seeking more time to operate the city’s open dumpsite in Bonuan while it is still looking for a suitable area to build its permanent sanitary landfill in.
City Waste Management chief Reginaldo Ubando admitted the city received a 10-day ultimatum from the Environment Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources within which to adopt a safe closure plan, preparatory to eventual closure of the open dumpsite. URDANETA CITY - Lack of funds is the major concern facing the long-delayed irrigation regulating pond which is a major component of the San Roque Multi-Purpose dam in San Manuel town.
This was learned from Regional Director John Celeste of the National Irrigation Administration who said that the project needs at least P2.5 billion.
The Japan Bank for International Cooperation reportedly backed out as financier of the project as a result of the killing of peasant leader Jose Doton from San Nicolas. SOME 4,000 coconut trees in Labrador are being treated of brontispa infection, the Philippine Coconut Authority said.
PCA provincial chief Eleazar Parohinog said that Labrador accounts for the biggest number of infected trees in the province by the flat slender beetle brontispa which feeds on the soft tissues of coconut fronds, enough to kill the tree.
The other affected areas are Urdaneta City and Sual.The beetle, which is not common in the country, was first detected in April 2005 in Roxas Boulevard which is near the airport. Apparently, the pests were introduced here thru importation of ornamental palms. Read the rest of this entry »

LINGAYEN - Gov. Amado T. Espino supports the administration’s pardon for convicted former President Joseph Estrada except for the process involved.
Espino told a press conference Friday at the Urduja House lobby that it was Estrada who should have showed his interest in seeking pardon, not the other way around.

JDV: ‘Am not seeking Duque, Villar ouster’
HOUSE Speaker Jose C.De Venecia, Jr. deplored as “vicious disinformation” reports in national media that he is seeking the replacement — among several other members of the President’s cabinet — of Health Secretary Francisco Duque III and Undersecretary Antonio Villar Jr., the administration’s anti-smuggling czar.
