Seek revival of Dagupan’s night market
THE city government of Dagupan is set to revive the old night market phased out by the past city administration.
Councilor Jesus Canto, chair of the city councilor’s committee on market, said he will sponsor a resolution urging Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. to bring back the old night market due to persistent request of vendors and buyers.
“If the mayor approves the resolution, we can re-open the night market right away,” he said.
The night market used to be an additional attraction for buyers not only from Dagupan but also from outside till it was phased out by the administration of then Mayor Benjamin Lim in a bid to improve customer patronage of the newly opened Malimgas Public Market.
Canto said a hearing conducted by his committee on Tuesday endorsed the revival of the night market to boost the income of vendors and the city government and to provide a chance for people who feel it is more convenient to buy at night.
Canto said Nueva Street is now being prepared as a permanent night market site to accommodate all vendors who wish to avail of the chance.
The street would be withdrawn as a street at night in order to give way to the planned night market.
The committee hearing was attended by members of the Malimgas Dagupan Vendors Federation (MADAVFE) headed by July Perez and representatives of the city market administration, Task Force Marshal, Public Order and Safety Office and the Police.
The city government said it will not allow the vendors to spread their wares up to Galvan and Jovellanos Streets, sites of the old night market phased out by the past city administration. (PNA)
