STRESSED residents of sitio Camanggaan in barangay Mayombo, this city, together heaved a sign of great relief afternoon of June 13 upon switch-on of their long delayed electric power service thru a 100-kilovolt ampere transformer installed by the Dagupan Electric Corporation (Decorp).
Decorp, which had refused to reconnect power to the area following the non-cooperation of residents in identifying thieves who stole the company’s 75 KVA transformer shortly after the May 17 typhoon, finally installed the replacement transformer after barangay officials and other citizens tagged six persons responsible for the theft. THAT all-too-familiar fear coming with the first heavy gust of wind and strong lash of rains in their own backyard gripped the hearts of Pangasinenses, especially Dagupenos, once again last Sunday afternoon as Frank stormed into the province.
Everyone who had gone through killer howler Cosme earlier last May 17 were anxiously waiting for that certain degree of ugliness in the wind force anew, a sure sign of a repeat disaster at a time when everyone has hardly recovered from the first calamity.

ONE of the most jarring consequence of disasters –natural calamities, if you may — is the cutoff of communications, or at least the difficulty of accessing known help or assistance numbers for the latest information when you need it most.
This problem was brought home in very telling measure by no less than the reported inability of President Arroyo to check on the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) itself when she was trying to monitor disaster developments in the country from Fresno in California where she is making a three-day working visit to the United States.

TYPHOON Frank, expected to hit Dagupan City and other populated areas of central Pangasinan as of 8 pm. Sunday, did a sudden shift in direction towards Dasol in western Pangasinan and instead blew hardly inland but along the coasts of western Pangasinan and out to the South China Sea thru Cape Bolinao by yesterday, Monday.
This bit of explanation from the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Sciences Administration (Pag-asa) appeared to show why despite the agency’s own dire warnings about the typhoon heading toward the city’s and central Pangasinan’s earlier battered areas, not much wind struck Dagupan and immediate areas Sunday evening. SIXTEEN persons were hospitalized for food poisoning after partaking of food served in banquets for two weddings Sunday night at the Star Plaza Hotel in Dagupan.
Seven persons who participated in a wedding reception attended by 228 at the first floor of the hotel were brought to the Nazareth General Hospital.

FORTY MILLION pesos worth of medical equipments, supplies and medicines donated by Cardinal Santos Medical Center have been turned over to the provincial government of Pangasinan on June 19 at the Capitol Plaza in Lingayen, supporting the medical needs of typhoon “Cosme” victims and boosting the vision of Gov. Amafo T. Espino Jr. to make public hospitals competitive with the private hospitals.
During the turnover ceremony, the items of the first of three batches of deliveries were turned over to the provincial government of Pangasinan thru the Eastern Pangasinan Filipino0-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry President and the concurrent Abono partylist Chairman, Engr. Rosendo M. So.

TOUGH as nails and turning a century old in December, this year, Dionisio Datuin Mendoza received a special citation as Dagupan City’s oldest citizen during the celebration of the city’s 61st founding anniversary.
Relatives and barangaymates proudly witnessed the ceremony last Friday where “Mama Isio” received some P3,500 in cash gift and other assorted giveaways from the city government led by
Mayor Alipio Fernandez, Jr. and Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez.
