THE town of Lingayen continues to pay homage to the Chinese pirate, Limahong, who led an unsuccessful siege of Manila in 1574 before retreating to the north and settled in what was later known as the province of Pangasinan.

Lingayen Mayor Ernesto Castaneda revealed that Limahong Channel, believed to have been dug by the Chinese pirate and his 3,000 soldiers, including women and children, to provide his newly assembled vessels access to the sea, still evokes nostalgic memories till today. LINGAYEN—Governor Amado Espino Jr. has ordered personnel of the Provincial Agriculturist and the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPVET) to go to the field and provide hands-on technology to the farmers.

SAN FERNANDO CITY—Not much change in prices of commodities was noted in the province of La Union during the past week, the Department of Trade and Industry regional office said.

The DTI, in a report to the Philippine Information Agency regional office said this was based on the inspection conducted in the wet market of San Fernando City, 11 supermarkets and groceries, nine lumber and hardware stores, eight flour retailers, and seven bakeshops, all in San Fernando. LINGAYEN—The provincial board will look into the safety measures for both planes and residential neighborhoods in the Lingayen Airport following the crash-landing of a trainer plane at the airport runway.

THE National Food Authority (NFA) has been asked to allocate more rice to its outlets in Dagupan City as the present volume arriving was observed to be too low, compared to the actual demands for cheaper government rice.

The call was made by people who queued up before two NFA Bigasang Bayan here on Wednesday, Some of them failed to buy any rice as the outlets had only a quota of 30 bags each.

AT least 36 agreements on agriculture and fisheries between the Philippines and China have been suspended.

The agreements have been suspended by Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap while consultations are being held with the affected sectors, Agriculture Undersecretary Berna Romulo Puyat told the House of Representatives agriculture committee chaired by Palawan Rep. Abaraham Mitra on April 29.

The agreements include those on setting aside 1 million hectares for hybrid rice and corn, additional 200,000 hectares in Northern Luzon for agri-business projects, 40,000 hectares for sugar cane and cassava for renewable fuels, and 5,000 hectares for tropical fruits. URDANETA CITY—A businessman was charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunitions before the City Prosecutors Office following a raid by the police in his house early Tuesday in barangay Pedro Orata here.

Seized by lawmen from the house of the suspect, Patrocinio de Luna, 63, were a Thompson sub-machine gun, cal. 45 automatic pistol, one magazine assembly for Thompson, 15 live ammunition for Cal. 45, one Caliber 38 revolver and 10 live ammunitions for Caliber. 38.

CALASIAO—Legal drag racing came to Pangasinan with the holding of the first Vice Mayor Ramon Guico III Invitational Open Drag Race recently at the Binalonan Airfield in Binalonan town.

Guico, a licensed pilot and a captain, owns the Binalonan Airfield.
The invitational drag race participated in by some 200 car and motorcycle drivers, was sponsored by the Autolimits Pangasinan Auto Group Inc. headed by Rafael de Vera with Patrick Catama as race director.

UMINGAN—Three persons were killed and five others seriously injured when a mini-bus bumped an overloaded motorized tricycle from behind at about 4:45 a.m. on Sunday along the national highway in barangay Gonzales, this town.

The fatalities were identified as Carlito Cariaso, 37, driver of the tricycle; and two of his passengers identified as Anthony Feliciano, 16, and Alberto Esteban, 54, all of barangay San Juan, San Jose, Nueva Ecija. Read the rest of this entry »
