PANGASINAN has enough rice supply for the next four months or up to July, according to the National Food Authority.

Edilberto Libatique, branch manager of NFA western Pangasinan based in Lingayen, said that the total rice stocks in the province amounts to some 3.6 million bags with NFA having 193,000 bags in its bodegas. Estimated household stocks today stand at 2.2 million bags while traders have some 860,000. The province expects to harvest some 635,000 bags of palay, equivalent to 413,000 bags of rice.

He said that based on this data, there is enough rice supply for the province for the next four months.

THREE things to keep your sanity and peace in these stressful times: Old Hanna Barbera cartoons on TV, a quiet brook or creek in a forest and a little child’s (preferably, your apo’s) laughter at play.

I have taken solace, okay, refuge, in these things lately, ones I have been largely ignoring or taking for granted in the past because of pressure of work. Now I find they provide such a unique feeling of relief after a hard day’s or week’s toil. Maybe I’m really getting old.

The cartoons, especially the Tom & Jerry or Mickey Mouse varieties are being re-run in one TV channel and it’s a delight to find yourself almost unconsciously laughing out loud (lol!) in your living room, something you’ve hardly done before. Such therapy, indeed!.

FOR seven years now, the country has been importing rice to augment the local produce.

Now, that’s a sad reality considering that the Philippines is mainly a rice-producing country with a research facility exclusively devoted for rice production. Foreign students and researchers came here to gain knowledge. Now those Thais and Vietnamese students who had trained here might be laughing at us. These countries are producing more than what their people need and therefore can afford to sell their excess to us.

LINGAYEN- An official of the National Food Authority (NFA) said the current scene of buyers queuing up at NFA retail outlets in markets in Pangasinan is not an indication of rice crisis but only “price crisis.”

Edilberto Libatique, branch manager of NFA in western Pangasinan, observed that the wide gap between NFA rice and commercial rice is the reason people are queuing up before NFA’s “bigasang bayan”.

“So, it’s not really (a) supply crisis but one which we might call possibly as price crisis,” declared Libatique whose office covers 22 towns and three cities of the first, second, third and fourth district of Pangasinan.

Such is the gem that glows out of the fine and classic musicale of Pangasinan orchestras that are all too often tapped to provide entertainment not only in neighboring provinces but even in the big cities.

Pangasinan Orchestra was started by a clan in the small, agricultural town of Basista, now known as the hometown of famous orchestras. THE word will come from Public Works and Highways Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. as to what date the new Dawel-Pantal-Lucao Road, including its bridge component, in Dagupan City, will be inaugurated and opened.

This was disclosed by Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr. congressman of the fourth district of Pangasinan, who believes the project could be inaugurated and opened very soon being now 99.9 percent complete.

POLICE operatives of Dagupan accompanied by anti-prostitution civic and religious representatives swooped down on the city’s ‘ red light district’ in Arellano-Bani here, arresting several pimps and customers of suspected prostitution dens and lewd show clubs over the past few days.

The police operation supervised by City Police Chief Dionicio Borromeo was part of the intensified campaign to clamp down on prostitution patrons and operators in the city in line with City Ordinance 1896-2007 or the Anti Flesh Trade Ordinance.
