SCHOOL authorities have asked heads of public and private schools to hold simple but meaningful school activities during the last two months of the present school year.

Schools Superintendent Alma Rubie Torio also urged school officials to be” very transparent” especially on finances in order to prevent problems or complaints that may be raised by concerned parents.

RIVERSIDE property owners who stand to be affected by a planned boulevard in their area may not so easily grant the city government its wish of donating part of their lots..

A letter entitled “Greed for Power” last week criticized the plan of the city government to build the riverside boulevard starting from behind the Star Plaza Hotel up to the back of the Land Transportation Office.

URDANETA CITY,– The widening of a portion of the Maharlika Road in this city is now almost complete but for a lone property owner who is asking for a higher value for his property that would be affected before he gives in.

This was disclosed by Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. who said the Department of Public Works and Highways is resolving the issue as the property is the only remaining block to the construction.

BINALONAN—Alaminos City Mayor Hernani Braganza said here Saturday the tri-cities ferry service to be put up by the cities of Alaminos, Dagupan and San Fernando will be finalized in agreement-signing among the local executives on March 1 in Dagupan City.

It is all systems go as far as all of us three city mayors are concerned,” Braganza said.

Signing the MOA are Braganza, and Mayors Alipio Fernandez Jr. of Dagupan City and Pablo Ortega of San Fernando City.

MALASIQUI—The Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group (PASG) contributed some P6.78 billion to the government’s coffer since its creation by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo eight months ago.

Speaking to newsmen here, Undersecretary Antonio Villar Jr., PASG chief, said the amount was based on duties and increases duties paid by individuals and firms that imported goods from abroad with or without the required import permits.

STO. TOMAS—The Department of Tourism said that it is continuously helping promote tourism in the province of Pangasinan, the largest province in the whole Ilocos Region.

DOT Regional Director Martin Valera told newsmen that only last week, he turned over a check to bankroll the redevelopment of a swimming pool in Asingan town put up during the reign of then President Fidel Ramos.

URDANETA CITY—The city of Urdaneta remains the vegetable capital not only of Pangasinan but of the entire Ilocos Region.

Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. said the town’s vegetable “bagsakan” market, the biggest in the entire Region I, is proof that is in Urdaneta where vegetables being distributed to various parts of the country are coming from.

Perez said Urdaneta is not only the trading center for all sorts of vegetable but is also big producer of vegetables as well.

LABRADOR—A “despedida” (send off) party ended in tragedy here when two persons drowned while swimming in the beach in barangay Tubuan Saturday afternoon, according to the police.

Sr. Inspector Roberto Manuel, chief of police here, identified the fatalities as Susan Bravo of barangay Asinan, Labrador; and Ruel Manuel, alias “Isaac”, 28, a resident of Navotas, Metro Manila.

A GROUP of Dagupeños in the North Bay area of California, USA is raising $50,000 among themselves in order to build houses for at least 30 families belonging to the city’s poorest of the poor.

Members of the group are pooling their resources so that they can contribute their share in solving the acute housing problem in the city, according to City Administrator Alvin Fernandez.

The houses will be built in the city’s Gawad Kalinga-Bangusville Housing Project in barangay Bonuan Gueset where some 100 houses already stand. Read the rest of this entry »
