CONTRARY to common impression, the social welfare office is not only concerned with the distribution of relief goods during disasters but also undertakes various other programs and projects throughout the year.

Social welfare officer Deverly Soriano told the Pantongtongan Tayo radio program of the Philippine Information Agency over Radyo ng Bayan DZMQ last Tuesday that the provincial social welfare and development office implements several programs but the people apparently only notice it for its relief work during calamities.

She said there are programs concerning women, children, disabled persons and senior citizens.

The provincial office also maintains a crisis intervention center to look after the welfare of battered women and abused and neglected children.

Meanwhile, project evaluation officer Myrna Celeste of the same office urged all cities and towns in Pangasinan to participate in the Search for Child-Friendly LGUs.

Only Bani town and Urdaneta City participated last year. Bani was reported one of the winners.
