EDITORIAL / 9-1-1 in Pangasinan

HEARTWARMING how many of our overseas countrymen really go out of their way to show how much they care for us back home in these floodlands and disaster-prone areas.

Ultra-modern ambulances fully loaded with all kinds of life-saving equipment imaginable will soon be at the service of dagupenos and Malasiquinians courtesy of a Michigan-based Fil-Am nurses group who will also be coming over to conduct a medical mission this week.

In the mold of those 911 emergency vehicles you see on TV, the ambulances once delivered straight from the Subic yard where Malasiqui officials were last reported working for the transport of the same in container vans all the way to Malasiqui and Dagupan, will be a most welcome sight to residents who will soon be experiencing how a modern world should be responding to emergencies.

State-of-the-art facilities like these however require great maintenance to keep them in tip-top shape and thus be true to their billing as real life-savers for a long time. Proper training of personnel that will handle these is equally important lest haphazard or incompetent use and handling result in wasted efforts.

Recipient local government units of such expensive and sensitive facilities are duty-bound to give these more than the usual passing care and maintenance accorded local equipment that soon either rot from disuse or bog down from misuse or overuse.

Finally, we hope our recipient-officials will see their way clear towards making these ambulances serve the less fortunate among the populace without much hassle (like asking them for gasoline money when they avail of its service) for it is they, more than anyone else in the perfumed society who need the service more. A code of ethics for the use of these facilities, to start with, seems in order now –given the propensity of people, officials included, to make public donations their private properties.
There, we said it.
