SAN JUAN, Ilocos Sur—A former woman barangay kagawad was mauled and killed by unidentified suspects in a rice field in barangay Muraya, this town on Sunday.

The victim, Erlinda Balmoa, 68, was reportedly gathering string beans from her farm when she was mauled by unidentified persons as evidenced by contusions in different parts of her body.

STA.BARBARA–Less than four months after attending a Gawad Kalinga seminar at the University of the Philippines and Ateneo, the municipal mayor here said his town is now ready to build a housing project for homeless families.

Mayor Reynaldo Velasco said he was among 100 mayors throughout the country invited to that seminar which he said was worth it because a few months later he signed a memorandum of agreement with officials of GK that will help the municipality build the housing units.

CALASIAO—A man and his nephew were killed and three others injured when the motorized tricycle they were riding on collided with a passenger bus afternoon of January 12 in Calasiao.

The accident happened along the national highway in sitio Paronking, barangay San Miguel.

Dead on arrival at the Region 1 Medical Center were Carlos Osian, 35, and his nephew Philip Joshua Osian, 7, both of Poblacion Sur, Sta. Barbara, who sustained severe injuries in different parts of their bodies. Read the rest of this entry »
