Police puzzled by cop’s slay

BALUNGAO – Investigators are still facing a blank wall in connection with the slaying of a policeman at his rest house while about to celebrate Christmas with friends in front of his farm house in barangay Mabini here on Monday at 11:15 p.m.

The victim was identified as Gervacion Villanos, Jr. 55, chief investigator of the Balungao Police who was shot by unidentified suspects in different parts of his body

Members of the Balungao Police learned of the shooting thru a telephone call made by Mrs. Nenita Caguisano, a resident of barangay Mabini. Rushing to Villano’s farm house, they saw their colleague lying on the floor in a pool of his own blood.

Robbery was ruled out as motive in the slaying although a caliber 45 pistol personally owned by Villanos was missing.

The responding policemen however found the Caliber 9mm. pistol issued to Villanos by the Balungao Police.

Initial investigation showed that at about 10:15 p.m., Villanos responded to knocking at their kitchen door.

An unidentified suspect opened fire on him as soon as he opened the door. Staggering and wounded, he ran towards the open front door but the suspects followed him and fired several more shots till he fell.

A team from the Scene of the Crime Office (SOCO) from Urdaneta City headed by Superintendent Panfilo Regis recovered 14 empty shells of 5.56 mm M16 Armalite rifle at the crime scene.

According to the companions of the victim, who were in front of the farm house at the time of the shooting, the suspects were wearing black sweat shirts, black overall bonnets and camouflaged pants.

The gunman was described as approximately 5 feet, five inches tall, medium built and armed with long firearm.

He fled on foot right after the incident, joining an unidentified look-out.

They were presumed to have fled northwards leading to the foot of Mt. Balungao.
