THE PEN SPEAKS / Can media ever discipline itself?

THE governor, we learned, has called on the local media to unite and help him achieve his vision for a progressive Pangasinan.
Gov. Amado T. Espino issued the call during the Media Night at the Capitol grounds last Thursday where he addressed some 200 or so media personnel. We failed to honor the invitation because of an earlier commitment.

Perhaps, what the governor meant was for the two major clubs in Pangasinan to unite, fuse into one and carry a single name as before when there was only one media organization, the Pangasinan Press and Radio Club.

WHAT does it take to be considered a Child-Friendly School?
One would think that this program started by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) under the Fifth Century Programme for Children back in 1999, simply means “caring’ for the child, keeping him or her safe from harm and providing him social and educational assistance” as mandated by law.

That may well be so – but it’s really more than that.

OTHER big cities experience worse traffic conditions than Dagupan Cty during the holiday season, the head of the public order and safety office claimed Thursday.

The closure of two major streets – Galvan and Zamora – to traffic to pave the way for the popular “Tiangge” - contributed largely to the clogging of traffic on A. B. Fernandez Avenue, the city’s major thoroughfare, Robert Erfe-Mejia admitted in a radio interview.

THE University of Pangasinan is fully committed to the untrammeled exercise of press and academic freedom citing the constitutional provision about it.

UPANG chairman Cesar T. Duque said the university “practices responsible press freedom” adding that “the university also fully supports academic freedom being the bullwark of man’s pursuit of truth and his intellectual development.”

THE province of Pangasinan is the biggest recipient of Internal Revenue Allotment of all the provinces in the country.

The provincial IRA for 2008, is a whooping P1.36 billion or P1, 362,971,958.00. A little higher than the P1.2 billion allocation in 2007. Next is Cebu with P1.33 billion. Negros Occidental comes third with P1.26 billion

Other provinces in the billionaires’ row include Bulacan, Quezon, Isabela, Palawan Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Nueva Ecija, Iloilo and Leyte. Read more

THE University of Pangasinan has taken another big leap forward when 20 out of its 28 graduates passed the Midwifery Licensure Exams given last November 2007 with an impressive 71 percent passing percentage against the national percentage of 52 percent.

THE city government of Dagupan will study the proposal for the Land Transporation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to legalize the operations of colorum vans basing or entering the city.

City Administrator Alvin Fernandez said the proposal should be studied thoroughly as this might affect the earnings of operators of legitimate vans, including buses, mini-buses and jeepneys.

URDANETA CITY - Fresh from his trip to Spain early this month, Mayor Amadeo R. Perez, Jr. brought home glad tidings from the city of Ordizia, now the sister city of Urdaneta, about possible visits of big Spanish industrialists and scholarships for the youths of this bustling city of Pangasinan.

Ordizia in Spain and Urdaneta in Pangasinan forged a sisterhood agreement on December 5 in that Spanish city.
