UPang backs press freedom

THE University of Pangasinan is fully committed to the untrammeled exercise of press and academic freedom citing the constitutional provision about it.

UPANG chairman Cesar T. Duque said the university “practices responsible press freedom” adding that “the university also fully supports academic freedom being the bullwark of man’s pursuit of truth and his intellectual development.”

He said the university’s student publication is allowed the widest latitude for honest, truthful and responsible reporting, stressing the publication allows healthy debate even as it is also a training ground for future journalists.

As this developed, Pangasinan Pulse, a local survey group, cited the university’s recent national awards that singled out Dr. Edwin Cancino as outstanding NSTP coordinator for Community Project and the STET-VIP NSTP Kabalikat Award for Community Project Golden Flame given to the university for ‘Project CESAR’ which was cited for “propelling people and communities’ transformation. ”

The awards were presented on Nov. 29, 2007 in UP Los Baños, Laguna.

Meanwhile, UPANG President Catalino Rivera Jr., said the university has taken the lead in producing employable graduates not only in any part of the country but also overseas as well.

The university has a program that develops competitiveness and global outlook of its students, he said, citing its successful overseas “ on the job” training recently capped by five HRM students who have trained in five-star hotels in Singapore.
