City hall not too keen on commuter vans’ request for franchise
THE city government of Dagupan will study the proposal for the Land Transporation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to legalize the operations of colorum vans basing or entering the city.
City Administrator Alvin Fernandez said the proposal should be studied thoroughly as this might affect the earnings of operators of legitimate vans, including buses, mini-buses and jeepneys.
This was after Assistant Transportation and Communications Secretary Ariel Lim conducted a dialogue with operators of commuter vans in Dagupan City on Tuesday.
The van operators, belonging to three different companies whose units are plying Dagupan to Alaminos City and back, asked Lim to work for the issuance of franchises for colorum vans plying the city.
Lim, however, said they can only do that if the city councils of both Dagupan and Alaminos pass their respective resolutions seeking franchises to colorum vans plying their areas.
Fernandez expressed fear that legalization of colorum vans could aggravate the already chaotic traffic situation in Dagupan caused by many running public utility vehicles on the road.
He said the sticker system will be strictly enforced in the city next year to prevent the entry of any more colorum vehicles.
At present, the city is implementing two days of coding for jeepneys which means that each jeepney plying the city will have two days off on weekdays. (PNA)
