Village polls postponement now a long shot –Mayor Perez
URDANETA CITY – Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. said on Tuesday that only a miracle can postpone the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections slated allover the country on October 29.
Perez said many of the barangay and SK candidates in 34 villages here have already filed their respective certificates of candidacy notwithstanding that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has certified a bill postponing the polls as “urgent”.
He noted the Senate adjourned on Tuesday without even discussing the postponement of the barangay-SK elections.
From what he gathered, the contest per barangay here is limited to two or there aspirants each or possibly a maximum of four with each having separate sets of candidates for councilmen.
The mayor admitted that he is in a difficult situation because all those fighting against each other in different barangays are his friends and supporters in all the elections he went through.
‘So, I opted to stay neutral in this election because all the candidates are my friends and the political exercises are now partisan,’ he said. (PNA)
