THE PEN SPEAKS/ Here’s to a peaceful barangay polls

By DANNY O. SAGUN

THERE’S no stopping anymore the October 29 barangay and sangguniang kabataan polls. Only incumbent barangay captains are actually desperately moving for another postponement for obvious reason. Everyone else want the election to push thru.

We just hope the coming political exercise will not be as bloodstained as the past May 14 polls. It’s likely that protagonists in many barangays are relatives so that the campaign would not be as heated as in other political contests.

Yet there have been numerous cases when even blood brothers hate each other so much they themselves cut each other’s throat. Like Cain whose hatred for his kid brother Abel due to envy led him to commit the first murder case in man’s history.

The PNP and the Comelec are again closely monitoring towns with bloody election history (what they call “areas of immediate concern” or simply “hot spots”). PNP provincial director Col. Isagani Nerez, whose stay here has been marked by political killings since Day 1 (remember the Resuello and other cases?) is again facing a big challenge on his leadership and capablity to maintain a peaceful, orderly election.

That Resuello killing has yet to rest. A suspect was nabbed indeed but his alleged companion is still at large. The mastermind has yet to be identified although many including our police officials have already made up their mind.

We really wonder why many murder cases or assassinations involving prominent personalities from this province have remained unresolved. The list is getting longer and it sends a shiver down the spine

For the police, once cases have been filed before the courts their job is over - the case is solved, we always hear from them. To the public, this is not enough. They want concrete results.

Candidates for barangay captains are scrambling for that coveted post. Five to six are vying for it per barangay as in San Jose in our humble town of San Jacinto where Frank Tuazon, husband of our officemate, Briny, is one of five bets. Frank, we know, is wiser and more prepared this time around after failing in his earlier political bids.
