Dagupan PNP labels speculations unfair
CITY Police Chief Dionicio Borromeo sought Thursday to dispel some “hurtful” speculations that the amount found by honest boy Gicoven Abarquez of Perez Marketsite as reported by the police may not have been the exact amount actually found.
‘We do not want to put the boy’s shining act of honesty in vain,” he said.
Borromeo, admitting that there have been some “unfair” reports that some of his policemen may have had some less than honorable intention over the money, said any hanky-panky was not at all possible as even the businessman who accompanied the boy in turning over the amount said the money was sealed and signed over upon inspection in the presence of four city policemen.
He did not identify the policemen concerned.
Borromeo clarified that some misimpression may have been created by the police’s deliberate non-disclosure of some material details on the money found, saying they had to make sure proper counterchecking measures against false claimants are in place before entertaining queries or revelations from strangers or any interested party.
The police chief said there have indeed been some claimants already who could not however correctly describe the exact details and circumstances of the money they claim to have lost.
The police have given the true owner of the money 60 days — counted from last Monday — to show up and prove his claim over the amount. If no such owner turns up, the police may just decide to award the money to the boy-finder, Borromeo explained.
