THE Sangguniang Panlalawigan will hold its first out of town regular session and consultative meeting at Vista De Las Alas resort in Lucap, Alaminos City on September 17, 2007.

According to Vice Governor Marlyn Primicias-Agabas, the out of town activity is intended to bring the lawmaking body of the provincial government closer to the people.

“As we go out of town, we can see up close the needs of our constituents per district of Pangasinan,” the vice governor said.

LINGAYEN – The provincial government has launched an information and education campaign in various schools provincewide to raise public awareness on rabies which is identified as one of the top twelve (12) killer diseases in the world.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Philippines is ranked third in the world in reported cases of rabies. This alarming report has prompted the national government to intensify efforts to make the Philippines a rabies-free country.

In Pangasinan, 94 cases have been reported, mostly in western municipalities. Read more

ASINGAN – Members of the “Akyat Bahay” gang in Metro Manila might now have expanded their operations in the provinces.
Police expressed this possibility after members of “Akyat-Bahay” gang from Caloocan and Malabon cities were arrested on Sunday, victimizing a family in Asingan.

Arrested by the Asingan Police with the help of the Binalonan Police were one Manolito Vargas, driver, and Mike Manuel Asinep, 27, both of Dagat-Dagatan, Pajo, Calooocan City.

The other suspect was Rey Mira of Maya-Maya Street in barangay Longos, Malobon City who was arrested by the Urdaneta Police that set up a checkpoint along a road in barangay Caboloan, Urdaneta from Asingan town. Read more

THE city is in near-frantic mode now to find the best strategy to perk up business at the newly-built three-storey Malimgas Pubic Market which continues to operate at a loss.

Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez and Councilor Jesus Canto, chairman of the city council’s committee on market, in a move to prevent a worse financial disaster in the city under the new city administration, suggested the conduct of a thorough study to find means for the market to earn more.

Both officials were interviewed by newsmen after City Treasurer Romelita Alcantara told the city council that the market was earning only an average of P1.1 million a month when in fact its operating expenses stand at more than P930,000 a month. Read more

DAGUPAN CITY Legal officer George Mejia, interviewed a day after the judgment on Estrada and his co-accused before the Sandiganbayan, said that in order to convict an accused in a criminal case, the latter’s guilt must be proven beyond reasonable doubt.

Because he was convicted by the Sandiganbayan, it means that the evidence against the former president was really that overwhelming, according to him.

In a criminal case, Mejia said the required evidence to secure a conviction is “proof beyond reasonable doubt” as distinguished from civil cases. Read more

MANAOAG – A five-year old girl was killed when she was accidentally shot by her nine-year old brother while the latter was toying with the hand gun of their father in barangay Cabanbanan here Friday afternoon.

The fatality was identified as Rhea Mae Biado who was rushed to the Manaoag Community Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

The suspect was Rowel Biado, a Grade III pupil who confessed he accidentally shot her younger sister while playing with the home-made firearm of their father Renato, 49, farmer, placed under a pillow on top of their bed. Read more

Army soldiers overrun NPA camp in Cabugao

NARVACAN, Ilocos Sur – Government troops overran on Sunday a big camp of the New People’s Army (NPA) while on combat operation in the remote areas of Sitio Caset, Barangay Maradodo, Cabugao, Ilocos Sur.

Lt. Colonel Roy T. Devesa, Commander of the army’s 50th Infantry Battalion based in San Juan, Ilocos Sur, stated in his report to Colonel Loreto G. Rirao, Commander of the army’s 503rd Brigade based in Barangay Sulvec, Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, that taken by soldiers was an NPA camp that can accommodate from 30 to 50 persons.

The NPA camp has several outposts in its surroundings. Read more
