THERE’ are killings everywhere in San Carlos City. And fellow mediamen here are one in the assessment that this blood-spilling – especially last week when three, count that, three gunslayings were committed – cannot be “isolated” cases as a ranking police officer of Pangasinan prefers to call it.

The situation has gotten to the point where many people, especially residents, are beginning to think it’s the pre-martial law San Carlos all over again when the city earned the monicker of Tombstone City (after the famous, if legendary, American West city of gunslingers and bounty hunters). FROM dawn to early morning daily, about 600 persons receive the same inspirational text message on their mobile phones. The messages are passages from the Bible or the Koran, or quotations from motivational books.

The messages do not come from mobile phone companies and the recipients do not pay to receive them. They are religiously sent daily by Ashok Vasandani, an Indian national who started the “mission” to touch the people’s heart more than three years ago. Read the rest of this entry »

IT’S GOOD the city government is moving to contain the proliferation of “alien” bangus in the city’s fish market. Yes, many have been fooled to buy milkfish that tastes like mud – maablir.. But the problem is not only the taste. The flesh of the alien bangus is hard or rigid unlike that of the Bonuan bangus which is soft

Mayor Al Fernandez wants proper labeling of the milkfish sold in the bagsakan area in the Magsaysay market. Such measure will properly inform buyers whether the fish comes from the fishponds of the city or from other areas. We learned that milkfish from as far as Laguna and Bulacan find their way to the Magsaysay market. Read the rest of this entry »

OF the four cities in Pangasinan, it is only Alaminos City that does not have a big college or university. The first district is very wide yet there are no universities that could really address the educational needs of the people especially the poor.

There is a PSU campus in Infanta but it basically offers agriculture courses, I think.

This corner learned that one of the medium term development plans of the city government is to put up a city college just like Urdaneta City. Read the rest of this entry »

CITY Treasurer Romelita Alcantaraa said if the city rents out the third floor of the Malimgas Public Market to call center outfits — now said to be eyeing Dagupan City for their location — at P200 to P250 per square meter per month, Dagupan will realize no sensational income but still a substantial one.

She said although the rental is minimal it is nevertheless better than the almost nil income the city is generating today when the market’s third floor is serving only as a pay parking area. Read the rest of this entry »
