SMORGASBORD/ New board member

By LIWAY M. YPARRAGUIRRE

WITH a vote of 243-202, Urbiztondo number 1 Councilor Raul Sison won against Pozorrubio Councilor Dennis Uy, earning the right to represent his colleagues at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan as sectoral representative.

Coming from the second district of Pangasinan, he practically broke the hold of the fifth district on the Philippine Countilors League (PCL) – Pangasinan chapter.

After interim president Terry Sison in 1992 and the election of former president Ramon Bautista in 1992 (both are from Manaoag), came Urdaneta Councilors Eddie Perez (two terms) and Chu Carancho (now a regular board member), Danny Uy of Binalonan (recently elected as regular board member), and interim president Urdaneta City Councilor Chinky Perez.

He humbly admitted that he was restless and nervous during the counting (which started at about 6pm and lasted until 2a.m.).

His winning secret: he started going around the province (visiting the councilors at their respective homes, knocking even early in the morning with a cake at hand) on May 15 or after the elected officials in Urbiztondo were proclaimed.

He said he visited them not only once or twice but several times, one councilor he visited seven times. “Ako ay madaling lapitan at matapat na umakap sa kanila,” he remarked.

Among his many plans is, during national conventions, he will pay in advance (from his own pocket) the registration fees of his colleagues for them not to be burdened lining-up at the registration area, and for us to be housed in one area. (Common problem during such big conventions is chaotic billeting arrangement even if one registered early before the actual date).

“But of course, they will pay me back later. I will also attend to all their needs during the convention so that will not have a problem liquidating their expenses when they reach home,” he explained.

He is amenable to the idea of his opponent (Dennis) to give a ring to third termer councilors. And if the officers would decide to adopt and implement it, then he will wholeheartedly go for it.

His wife Marilyn Sison, a CPA working in big company in Manila revealed that she was the one who convinced his husband to run in 1992 .

“I know he has the making of a good politician. Everytime he puts his feet forward and decide on an upcoming election, he consults me and our family gives our full support. I’m happy that he won. I know it’s his destiny to be a Board Member,” she said.
