THE Commission on Elections has extended voters’ registration from July 24 to 31 to accommodate those who failed to register earlier for lack of ample time.
In Resolution No. 8257 issued last July 24, the electoral body noted the public clamor for an extension of registration to ensure “free, orderly, honest, peace and credible elections.”
Registration is to be conducted at the office of the election officer from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The last day for filing of applications was last July 22 for the scheduled October 29 barangay election.
The poll body in separate Resolution No. 8256 likewise extended the registration of youth voters on July 28 and 29, and August 4 and 5.
The Comelec also approved a resolution by the National Youth Commission requesting that registration be conducted in the barangay to be manned by a receiving committee. The filing center may be held in the barangay hall, public school or any other public building centrally located within the barangay. The filing center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The receiving committee in each barangay is composed of two public school teachers.
The applicant has to personally appear before the committee and present such documents as certificate of live birth, baptismal certificate, school records or any other documents that establishes his identity and qualification. (DOS/PIA)

THE Public Employment Service Office (PESO) in Dagupan City is inviting applicants to avail of the Transfer of Technology Program being provided by the country’s Technical Education and Skills Development Authority and Japan International Training Cooperation Organization (TESDA-JITCO).
PESO manager Melita Malong explained that the TESDA-JITCO skills and technology transfer program is a private agreement between Japanese and Philippine companies that seeks to promote competitiveness of Filipino workers through on-the-job training in advanced production systems in various trades and enterprises all over Japan. DAGUPAN City Mayor Alipio Fernandez, Jr. has ordered the City Health Office to implement the Department of Health – initiated program “Operation Itaob Mo” in a bid to prevent the spread of dengue in the city.
Expressed through Resolution No. 5839-2007, the program is a house to house, school to school, and barangay to barangay campaign on the prevention and control of dengue.
Fernandez directed city health officer Leonard Carbonell to coordinate with various local government units and non-governmental organizations to intensify health education and advocacy against dengue especially in areas that have the highest recorded incidence. Read more

ANOTHER foreign-funded project will benefit Dagupeños in terms of health and sanitation as the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) chose Dagupan City one of the recipients of the Program on Sustainable Sanitation for East Asia for Philippines (SUSEA-Philippines)
Other recipient local government units of the program are: Alabel in Eastern Samar; Olcom, Leyte; Saranggani City, General Santos and Mountain Province.
The city government will enter into a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Health formalizing and confirming their partnership for the implementation of SUSEA Philippines Program. Read more

AFTER 75 years, a Pangasinense was finally elected president of the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities, the country’s oldest and largest association of private schools.
Dr. Gonzalo Duque, president of the Lyceum-Northwestern University here, was chosen president by the 21-member board of directors during PACU’s organizational meeting in Manila last July 21.
The board was earlier elected at large by its more than 160 member-schools. Read more

UMINGAN – A barangay captain here died a few hours after he was shot by unidentified gunmen aboard a motorcycle along the national road in barangay Gonzales, Umingan last Saturday at 8:20 a.m.
Rodolfo Angala, 57, barangay captain of San Pablo, Umingan, was riding in another motorcycle while proceeding to the town proper when his assailants followed him and shot him from a few meters behind. Read more

LINGAYEN – More foreign students are coming to the country to study due to “educational tourism” now being promoted by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
Dr. Carlito Puno, CHED chairman, told newsmen here that at least 2,000 students from India and 200 from Nepal are set to arrive in the Philippines in October this year in response to the vigorous campaign on educational tourism by CHED.

AGUILAR – Four suspected vigilantes, riding in tandem on two motorcycles, shot and killed a suspected notorious rustler in his home in barangay Calsib here Friday morning.
The fatality was identified as Primitive Riparip, alias Tebong, 48 who sustained several gunshot wounds in different parts of his body and died on the spot.
The suspects parked their motorcycles along a barangay road, walked to the house of the victim and opened fire when they saw him. Read more
