WHO is benefiting from the strong peso? Surely not the Overseas Filipino Workers.

I find it funny, if not distressing, that OFWs who are credited with keeping the economy afloat, if not robust, with their regular remittances, hardly benefit from their assistance.

Case in point: My brother works abroad, sending dollars monthly to his family here. When he went to the US some years back, the dollar to peso exchange was 55 or 56, so a dollar can go a long way. THE tight congressional race in the third district of Pangasinan ended in the filing of election protests before the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET) by the two losing candidates against Congresswoman-elect Rachel Arenas.

Arenas was proclaimed winner of the election in the district last May 19 based on the final result of canvassing of election returns made by the Provincial Board of Canvassers over the objection of the camp of congressional candidate Gallant Soriano.

During the canvassing, Soriano’s camp through lawyer Conrado Soriano, tried to stop Arenas’ proclamation but was told by Provincial Elections Supervisor Reddy Balarbar, chairman of the canvassing board, to instead bring his case before the HRET.
