Relatives rule in Pangasinan
LINGAYEN – It’s a family affair in some local government units in Pangasinan once the newly elected and reelected officials assume office on July 1.
This is because of the election of relatives by the electorate in the May 14 election despite the still unsettled issue on political dynasty.
In the May 14 election, two father and son tandems came out to rule their respective municipalities for the next three years.
The first is in Binalonan where Mayor Ramon Guico Jr. was reelected while his son, Ramon Guico III, was elected vice mayor.
The Guico father and son ran unopposed.
The elder Guico is a cousin of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. He is president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines.
It is also the same story in nearby San Manuel town, east of Binalonan, where Mayor Salvador Perez was reelected and his son Alain Jerico became vice mayor.
In the 2004 election, Salvador won his second term of office but the electorate of San Manuel dropped Alain Jerico.
In San Carlos City, brothers Julier and Joseres both sons of slain Mayor Julian Resuello, were elected mayor and vice mayor, respectively.
As elected vice mayor in 2004, Julier is now mayor of San Carlos City, succeeding his slain father.
Meanwhile, reelected Mayor Jose Peralta Jr. and brother Philip, who was elected vice mayor, will rule Balungao town for the next three years.
Likewise, Mayor Amado Espino III, of Bautista son of governor-elect Amado Espino Jr. had no opponent in his reelection bid while his uncle, Jose Espino, was reelected vice mayor.
Mayor Alfonso Celeste of Bolinao was reelected while his brother Rep. Arthur Celeste won his third and final term as congressman of the first district.
Third-termer Provincial Board Member Marlyn Primicias-Agabas and her husband Tyrone Agabas won as vice governor and board member, respectively, of the sixth district.
In the provincial board of Pangasinan, Marlyn will be the presiding officer while Tyrone is senior board member. Marlyn ran under the Kabalikat ng Mamamayang Piilpino (Kampi) while Tyrone ran under the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).
In the town of Asingan, comebacking Carlos Lopez Sr. returned to the mayoralty saddle with his son, Carlos Lopez Jr., elected as councilor.
In Basista town, Mayor Raul de Guzman won a third term of office while his two brothers, Ferdinand and Orlando, also won as councilors.
In Pozorrubio, Mrs. Emma Chan replaced her husband Artemio as mayor while their son, Kelvin, won as councilor.
Calasiao Mayor Roy Macanlalay won a third term of office while his son Mark Roy Macanlalay won as councilor.
In Lingayen, Mayor Ernesto Castañeda Jr. ran unopposed while his daughter, Sheila Castañeda-Gonzales was elected councilor.
Urdaneta City Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. won another term of office while his son, Amadeo Gegorio Perez IV, was elected councilor.
Former Immigration Commissioner Alipio Fernandez Jr. returned to his seat as mayor of Dagupan City while his son, Dr. Alfie Fernandez, also a lawyer, and a nephew, Michael Fernandez, won as councilors, the latter now on his third term in the city council.
Alaminos City re-elected both Mayor Hernani Braganza and his sister, Councilor Ma. Angela Braganza. (PNA)
