Mayor Resuello finally laid to rest

SAN CARLOS CITY – Thousands of people sent off slain Mayor Julian Resuello to his final resting place at his family-owned Holy Garden Memorial Park at 3:30 p.m. today in barangay Agdao after a holy mass lasting up to noon at the St. Dominic Church.

Tight security was provided by a contingent from the local police, Regional Mobile Group and those from the Philippine Army and Philippine Air Force to prevent any untoward incident.

Everyone who went inside the church was frisked and their bags searched just to make sure no deadly weapons are carried by anyone.

For security reason, no public viewing of the body of Resuello was allowed, except for the members of the family of the slain mayor led by his son Julier, who succeeded his father as mayor of the city.

Julier Resuello, 28, was elected mayor of this troubled city along with his brother Joseres, 24, who replaced their dead father as vice mayoralty candidate of San Carlos City.

Elsewhere in the city, along the funeral march path, were installed big tarpaulins of photos of the bloodied Resuello. The sequence of camera shots were taken by a photographer just a few seconds after he was gunned down.

In his homily during the holy mass, Fr. Jaime Catungal, the celebrant, hailed the late mayor as one of the heroes of San Carlos City who had done a lot for the city and people.
He said there is another hero in the neighborhood in the person of Ayoy (nickname of Julier) who took over as city mayor upon the death of his father.

Julier was elected vice mayor of San Carlos City in 2004 along with his father who was reelected for his third and final term of office.

“This (mayorship) is a gift of your father and the people of San Carlos City,” Fr. Catungal said, addressing Julier. “The best sacrifice you can give to the people is to put them in your priority list. If you will give priority to the people, it entails so much sacrifice, just like what Spiderman did in the movie Spiderman 1,” said Fr. Catungal.

A rabid fan of the comics character Spiderman, Father Catungal related not only Spiderman 1 but its sequel Spiderman 2 and 3 to put his message across that the new mayor of San Carlos City must carry on the good works of his slain father or will also lose his web, like what happened to Peter Parker alias Spiderman at one time.

He said in Spiderman 1, Peter Parker wanted to be happy but had to give up his service to the people, especially those in danger.

“Being a leader, you must heed the call for service rather than the call of love for self. It’s time to mature, it’s time to give up your youth,” Catungal told the 28-year old new mayor of San Carlos City.

In every house leading to barangay Agdao, people tied black ribbons in the gates of their homes and even placards that said: “Thank you, Mayor Resuello and Godspeed”.
