Postal service here to stay, postman says
THE Philippine postal service is here to stay despite the advent of modern technologies in communication and the competition posed by private courier firms, an official of the Philippine Postal Corporation (Philpost) said Tuesday.
Manager Diosdado A. Garcia of the Philpost central-western Pangasinan district said that Philpost remains viable and relevant to the times with the introduction of innovative service packages.
Many clients also prefer the “express mail” service (domestic and international) being offered by the postal service because of its lower rates over those offers by private competitors. He noted that express mails cost only about P50 for the first 20 grams which is much lower than those of private couriers.
The other advantage of Philpost over its rivals private firms is that it maintains a nationwide network from Batanes to Mindanao that reaches or serves even the remotest parts of the country . The messengerial firms mostly operate in urban areas.
Admitting that the entry of modern telecommunication system like cellular services and electronic mail had affected postal services, Garcia said however that not all services can be covered thru text messages or by Internet as in the delivery of mails, packages or parcels. “Di naman kasi lahat ng service ay puede nang itext, kailangan pa rin ang physical delivery,” he stressed.
Garcia meanwhile urged the public to secure their postal ID card which is accepted internationally in postal and banking transactions and other uses which need the presentation of two or three major IDs like SSS or GSIS cards or driver’s license. (DOS/PIA)
