SMORGASBORD: ‘Prepare the toilet for the next user’
“Prepare the toilet for the next user.”A very simple but meaningful reminder from Congressman. Conrado M. Estrella III.
It smacks right on the saying “Don’t do unto others what you don’t want others do unto you.”
Let’s examine ourselves, have we ever thought about it? Do you have the “never mind attitude” on what the next user might say or feel?*****
Cong. Estrella utilizes a different design for classrooms or school buildings being funded by congressional fund. He said it is an unconventional design different from the classroom design being used by the DepEd.
Louver blocks is being used in-place of windows at the front side of the classroom as the attention of pupils are being distracted by passersby or the goings on outside the classroom.
(Louver is a frame on a door or window supporting spaced horizontal slats angled to admit air and light but not rain.)
To be maintenance free (if not to lower maintenance cost), they use steel doors and steel trashes instead of wooden doors and trashes (para anay free), insulation takes the place of plywood ceilings. The back windows have jolousies, a lanai is also constructed at the back of the classroom enclosed with grills to prevent vandals from breaking inside the classroom.
Estrella said his classrooms costs a little more than a regular classroom but “we really have to invest on it. What is important is the durability, if possible, it be maintenance free.”
They have so far constructed such kind of classrooms at the elementary schools at barangay Sta. Ana in San Manuel town and barangay Bantog in Asingan. One classroom will be constructed at sitio Baong Primary Annex School, two will be built at Pangaoang Elementary School, both located in Rosales.

Estrella said the classrooms come complete with comfort rooms, running water and a sink.
“You cannot really teach the pupils proper dental care and proper use of toilet if you don’t have a fully functional comfort room. So, part and parcel of it is a water pump. Before construction starts, we ask the PTCA if they can afford to shoulder the water pump’s electric consumption and they said yes,” the congressman stated.

And why the reminder on good toilet habits?
“I’ve often heardforeigners saying Asians do no know how to use toilets properly. We have to prepare the children to become globally competitive and part of it is toilet training. Very simple but sad to say we’re forgetting that,” he remarked.
“It should be a rule that after using the toilet, you have to prepare it for the next person who’s going to use it. We have to instill that to our students. The best way is to have running water inside the comfort room. The teacher can easily teach the children what they’re supposed to do after using the toilet. With a sink inside the classroom, the pupils will also be taught proper dental hygiene by brushing regularly,” Estrella further said.
Come to think of it, adults must remember the basics too..
