POEA stats: Women OFWs outnumber men

ABOUT 75 percent of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are women, most of whom are domestic helps, it was learned Thursday.
OIC-Regional Director Delfina Camarillo of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) told the Patrima Kapihan at the Philippine Information Agency Pangasinan office that DH jobs abroad are reserved for women while men are deployed as skilled workers in factories or offices.

She said that overseas placements continue to attract many Filipinos with more than 500,000 workers deployed for the first half of the year alone resulting in the rise of dollar remittances to the country.
Caregivers, nurses, engineers, farm workers are also in demand overseas, she noted. She advised applicants however to check first with the POEA and local employment service offices job openings and the recruitment agencies concerned to avoid becoming victims of illegal recruitment.
She also warned them not to deal with anybody doing house- to-house recruitment, pointing out that the activity is done thru the POEA, at the employment service offices in the province or in cities and municipalities or thru so-called job fairs.
Meanwhile, any complaints on violation of recruitment and labor laws may be forwarded to the POEA, the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC), the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) or thru the labor department. (DOS/PIA)
