PUBLIC schools here opened for a new schoolyear last Monday, June 5, to a relatively less busy stream of student traffic in most schools, an indication that most pupils and parents were not in a rush to start with their academic activity after the long summer break.

City schools division officials said they can not yet determine if there will be any classroom shortage because the enrollment is still going on and may continue up to July.

ARCHBISHOP Oscar Cruz of the Lingayen-Dagupan archdiocese has thrown his support behind media men who are under threat and facing intimidation and harassment, particularly from jueteng lords.

In one of his harshest words yet, Cruz warned jueteng lords and their cohorts that he will not stop making noise if they dare touch media men who refuse to succumb to their bribery and remain true to the ethics of their profession.

VICE Mayor Alvin Fernandez of Dagupan City, asked two university officials to at least first submit data and suggestions to justify any enactment of ordinance by the sangguniang panlungsod for the regulation of activities of fraternities citywide, not just within school campus, as sought by the two school heads.

Fernandez’ move came on the heels of criticisms from Lyceum University President Gonzalo T. Duque and Student Affairs Head Dominador ‘Boy’ Rayos of the University of Pangasinan who said they feared students will shy away from their schools if fraternity related violence is not checked. Both strongly sought sanggunian intervention.

A TEACHER from Mindanao who chose to apply as a domestic help in Hong Kong got at taste of what she may undergo in that foreign soil during her “training” at the recruitment agency’s building somewhere in Mabalacat, Pampanga.

Along with a dozen or so hopefuls who paid their recruiter placement fees ranging from P50,000 to P120,000, Leny A. Pioncio was reportedly ordered to work 10 to 14 hours almost non-stop for several days in that four-storey building as part of her training.

ALAMINOS CITY – Jennifer Perez, the domestic helper from this city, who was brought home paralyzed from the neck down after being pushed allegedly by her employer in Jordan from the second floor of a residential building, died from her serious injuries at their home in barangay Bisocol, this town last June 1.

Perez, 24, a teacher by profession in this city before her ill-fated overseas job, suffered from a broken spinal cord and was hospitalized for some eight months in Idrid. Jordan.

POZORRUBIO – Two persons died and another seriously injured in two separate vehicular accidents in Pangasinan over the weekend.

Killed along the national highway in barangay Palacpalac, Pozorrubio was Rannie Mella, 16, while Charlie Jude, 27, was in critical condition. Both were aboard a motorcycle that was bumped by a passenger van along the highway last Sunday.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – The scheduled opening soon of chartered flights of the Asian Spirit to the San Fernando Airport here will greatly enhance business activities at the Poro Point Special Economic and Freeport Zone (PPSEFZ).

This was revealed by the Poro Point Management Corporation (PPMC) as it supported calls from local officials in La Union for Asian Spirit to open chartered flights to the airport here.

MANGALDAN – One of the top drug personalities in this town here was gunned down and killed Tuesday dawn by a black-hooded suspect who struck on Cortes street in barangay Bari, Mangaldan.

The fatality was identified as Gavino Lomibao, 29, a resident of the place who was listed among the top 10 drug personalities of the town.

Police said Lomibao was playing a card game inside the house of Lourdes Zambranos at about 1:30 a.m. when the suspect approached from behind and fired away twice, hitting Lomibao in the chest.

LINGAYEN – Pangasinan national sports medalists are now assured of a better academic support thru Governor Victor E. Agbayani’s Provincial Sports and Excellence Scholarship Program set to be launched this year.

The governor approved the expansion of the province’s traditional academic scholarship program to now include athletes trained under Camp Victory Pangasinan (CVP) who are national sports medalists as beneficiaries.
