LINGAYEN- A total of 31 persons have already been arrested in six towns of Pangasinan in connection with the renewed crackdown on the illegal numbers game called jueteng which hs resurged after several months of lull.

This was the result after only the second day of operation in Pangasinan of the Anti- Gambling Task Force of the Criminal Investigation Detection Group, and the Pangasinan police provincial office.

The task force headed by Senior Superintendent Federico Castro Jr., CIDG chief in the Ilocos region, was assigned to validate the resurgence of jueteng not only in Pangasinan but also in the provinces of La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.

LINGAYEN—Provincial employees will start receiving their additional P1,000 compensation allowance next month.

Provincial Treasurer Ramon Crisostomo said the additional monthly allowance is retroactive to January this year, meaning each regular or casual employee will get P 5,000 covering the period January to May and P1, 500 each month thereafter.

ILLEGAL recruiters continue to victimize unwary people particularly from far-flung areas, a labor official said Friday.

Labor district officer Adonis Peralta said that despite wide and aggressive information campaign against illegal recruitment, at least two to three victims go to their office every week to complain.

He said smooth-talking recruiters convince their victims to part with their money for alleged downpayments for placement and processing fees.

SAN NICOLAS – Was the killing of a farmer-leader here related to local politics or was it part of a seeming bloody crackdown on militant left-leaning leaders?

Police investigators are looking into these angles in connection with the ambush Tuesday of peasant leader Jose Doton as he rode on a motorcycle with his brother Cancio on their way home. Two men on a Honda motorcycle fired at the brothers instantly killing Jose.
Cancio, hit by two bullets in the back, is still in critical condition.

Fernandez, wife of thtree-time Dagupan City Mayor (now Immigration Commissioner) Alipio F. Fernandez Jr, received her award on Mother`s Day in a ceremony at the Hotel Intercontinental in Makati City.

TO a liberal-minded Church authority, the controversial The Da Vinci Code novel – now with a movie version – is nothing but an entertaining thriller.

Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz said he saw nothing wrong with either reading the novel or seeing its movie version. He said he had read the book and found no offensive material to the Church. “It was a novel, a fiction, a thriller,” he said, admitting that he was entertained too as he read the book in just a short time.

VIGAN CITY - Residents of seven coastal villages in Ilocos Sur evacuated to higher grounds after their houses went dangerously under water due to sudden surge of giant waves from the south China sea starting Tuesday morning.

A report received by the Philippine Information Agency in Vigan said giant waves due to a “storm surge” battered barangays Sabangan, Gabao, and San Roque, all in Santiago town, and barangays Darapidap, Tamurong, Paypayad and Catirman in Candon City.

GIANT waves hitting the shores of the Bonuan Blue Beach here at Tondaligan Park during a storm surge has not kept visitors from enjoying the Bonuan waters.

Weathermen said that the big waves were caused by storm surge from the last typhoon ‘Caloy’ that exited two days ago to the south China sea.
