CITY MAYOR Benjamin S. Lim took to task the top local officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways and aides of House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. over their non-coordination of projects like the current asphalt overlay project in three sections of national roads located in the city.

For the first time in his recent “cold war” with De Venecia, he directly blamed unnamed local lieutenants of the House Speaker for putting pressure on DPWH engineers for the prosecution of projects that, according to him, were impractical and a waste of money.

PROVINCIAL Police Director Alan L.M. Purisima has suggested to the giant telephone companies operating in Pangasinan to upgrade their telephone lines to the modern fiber optics if they want to rid themselves once and for all of the cable line theft problem.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) provincial director broached the idea when he talked to top officials of Digitel and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company recently about the rampant theft of telephone wires bringing big losses to the companies.

POZORRUBIO – Five marijuana bricks weighing approximately five kilos – the biggest haul by local authorities on the outlawed stuff so far since January, this year — were seized by anti-drug police operatives last Thursday from a woman tagged as “marijuana queen.”
           
Supt. Harries Fama, Pangasinan police information officer and Provincial Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operation Task Group (PAIDSOTG) action officer, identified the suspect as Tessie Acquisio, 35, married and a resident of barangay Sapdaan in Santol, La Union.

PHILIPPINE Veterans Bank (PVB) has announced the coming opening of a branch in Sual, Pangasinan hopefully by next month. Bank officials said the opening date will depend on the approval of banking regulatory bodies.

The Sual branch will be the bank’s third in Pangasinan and the 45th in the country. PVB also has branches in Dagupan and Lingayen. Once established, the new branch will be the only commercial bank in Sual.

HOUSE Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. expressed hope that the historic visit of the President of Equatorial Guinea here last Sunday will most likely lead to the deployment of fishery personnel and executives to undertake fishery projects in Africa.

VIGAN CITY – The high demand for tobacco dust in the domestic market could bring the local tobacco industry to greater heights and save it from possible collapse.

This was the opinion of Administrator Carlitos Encarnacion of the National Tobacco Administration (NTA) who cited a breakthrough in government researches on tobacco dust that proved other uses of tobacco plant, not only in cigarette-making.
