Seized fake medicines reopen earlier case of doctor-customers

SEVERAL local doctors are being investigated anew by the Department of Health after their names appeared in a supposed list seized by the Department of Health from two fake drugs couriers arrested by the police last Tuesday in Malasiqui town.

Dr. Reynaldo Jacinto, chief of the standard and regulatory division of the Department of Health regional office, said the list was among the items found in the possession of the two suspects.

He said the doctors could be in cahoots with the syndicate believed to be based in Central Luzon.

Jacinto, it will be recalled, is the same controversial BFAD officer who came under fire from local officials and government doctors who were irked by his refusal to disclose the identities of medical practitioners earlier linked to fake drugs which thus spread the cloud of suspicion on all his fellow physicians.

The seizure followed previous other interception of fake medicines last year in Pangasinan by both the police and the National Bureau of Investigation. The suspects were identified as Eduardo Apilado, 50, and Jessie Quiroz, 53, both of San Fabian town.

They were flagged down by the police in barangay Cabatling, Malasiqui aboard a motorized tricycle. Police noticed the two boxes containing assorted medicines, consisting of bottled syrups, tablets and capsules when they asked for Quiroz driver’s license. .

The police became suspicious because the medicines were in big bulk and yet was being transported only on a tricycle.

Supt. Leopoldo Rivera, chief of police of Malasiqui, said two other companions of the duo managed to escape.
