Longest grill record quest boosts Alcala livelihood

ALCALA – This town’s plan to put up two Guiness World Records come April 29 this year has triggered a multiplier effect, benefiting its local economy.

Mayor Manuel Collado said he has tapped all welding shops in the town to make the grills to be used in the event, one for the longest grill at 150 meters and separate grills at three meters per unit to span three kilometers for them to erect a new world record in barbecue grill.

Each shop had to get additional laborers so that they can meet the deadline for the longest grill and longest barbecue grill events, Collado said.

“All hands are now cooperating to ensure that we can etch the name of Alcala in the Guinness Book of World Records,” Collado said.

The longest grill at 3 meters is owned by Germany but it would be wiped out with the 150-meter long grill being prepared by the people of Alcala, Collado proudly said.

Likewise, Alcala is eyeing to beat record in barbecue grill put up by Dagupan City in Pangasinan during its bangus festival in April 2005 at 2.2 kilometers.

The municipality has already secured its bid numbers for the two events from the London-based Guinness Record Book.

Collado said not a single centavo will be spent by the municipal government in these two world record-breaking feats as the activity will be bankrolled by overseas residents of Alcala.

He said the overseas residents planned the activity to spice up their Grand Homecoming on the occasion of the town fiesta of Alcala from May 3 to 6 in honor of the patron saint Holy Cross.

The overseas residents are sponsoring the grills themselves at 100 dollar per unit of three meters.

Thus there would be at least 1,000 sponsors. In the barbecue grill, Alcalenians and visitors will roast pork as well as milkfish to earn a place in the Guinness book of World Records.
