Central Visayas athletes dominate swimming event

Central Visayas won eight golds to dominate lat Friday’s swimming event in the Private Schools Athletic Association national games held at Dagupan’s Olympic-size swimming pool.

It was challenged in the pool however by western Visayas which won in five swimming events.

Central Visayas earned its victories when Todd Aris Belleza, Ian Rusiana, Andrie Yosef Ynclino and Andrew Dequina snatched the golds in the 200-meter relay.


The feat was duplicated by Rhea Zapanta, Katrina Rubi, Janeth Belano, Rubi Katrina and Mariveth Mall Abano in the 20-meter women free relay.

Cristine Cabasac gave two golds for her team Western Visayas when she won in the 800-meter free style and in 100-meter free style.

This was duplicated by her teammate Nianh Lyn Acain who snatched the gold in 200-meter backstroke and 100-meter fly.

Cabasac was timed at 11:26.14 minutes in women’s 800- eter freestyle, followed by Southern Mindanao’s Shahani Navarro at 11:46.66 while Charmaine Galang, also of Western Visayas placed third in 12:04.71.

Cabasac returned to the pool with a victory in the 10-meter free style at 1:08.50, followed by teammate Editha Visitacion at 1:08.99 and Maribel Mal Ababon at 1:15.39. Acain was timed at 2:57.03 in the 200-meter back stroke and 1:18.32 in the 100-meter fly to snatch her own two golds.

Kevin King accounted for Western Visayas’ fifth gold in swimming when he clocked 19:40.73, followed by Sato Ruiz Lipat in second place at 20:09.43; with Mark Catalan of Western Visayas in third place at 20.37.19.

Not to be outdone was Southern Mindanao which made its presence felt in swimming by winning four golds on the strength of victories of Carlo Rodriguez in the 200 and 100 meters fly, Shanai Navarro in the 200 meter breast stroke and Haroon in the 50 meter backstroke.

Jinno Salvacion won in the 200-meter breast stroke while Karen Kate Abordo won in 50 meter back stroke for one gold medal each of Southern Mindanao.

Kim Charles Castro won in the 200-meter back stroke for Central Luzon’s lone gold so far. (PNA)
