MANGALDAN – Christmas came too late for the family of an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW0 from this town when her wish came true only in the second week of the year, through the courtesy of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
Although she did not succeed in her quest for a better life for her family, former domestic helper Crestita Bercasio of barangay Lanas here fulfilled her dream with her selection as regional awardee of a special program of the OWWA.

EDITORIAL
IN THIS age of crass materialism, nothing could be more touching, more heartwarming and more Christian than serving one’s less fortunate fellowmen at great cost and effort to yourself – even crossing continents and seas to do it.
This was exactly what the team of doctors and medical workers from the Philippine Medical Association of Chicago (PMAC) did last week, about a hundred of them, when they came to Pangasinan and Dagupan City for their all-out medical mission, giving everything and expecting nothing in return.

AFTER ALL

EVER had anything stolen inside your house or office and got the police over to investigate it?
If you have, ten to one, the cop would be telling you it’s an inside job and, likely as not, he would in ill-disguised suspicion, tag one of those around whom he has questioned to be the probable culprit. You try to ask, in all pained disbelief, what made the police investigator think so and he’ll answer, “Well, I don’t know, but he seems nervous and evasive with his answers.” As plain and as pat as that. We know this is the standard reply/reaction because we’ve asked many petty crime victims around and they generally say that seems to be a common line mouthed by the cops.
If it happens that the police “suspect” is a close relative of yours, you’ll surely be at wit’s end trying not to appear too distrustful of the person from then on while he or she is with you in the house or the office – because, again in all probability, that’s the end of that. No hard clues, no damning evidence, no nothing. Case ended. You’d be lucky if you get a second or third visit from the police following up on the case.

THE PEN SPEAKS

DAGUPAN City Mayor Benjie Lim was the only fourth district mayor missing in last Wednesday’s visit to San Fabian of PGMA. It only shows that the misunderstanding, differences or heartaches between him and House Speaker Joe de Venecia have not been patched up. That affair, with Mayor Jaming Libunao directing, would put Lim on the spot. He was not totally reconciled yet with GMA although he went to join her for lunch at the President’s favorite restaurant in Bonuan about three weeks ago. We think he has not abandoned his call for GMA to step down. Seeing himself in company with her and JDV might have been unthinkable on his part.

San Fabian as host for the President’s visit in time for the town fiesta last Wednesday could have been picture perfect – were it not for that unfortunate incident at the town hall when lunchtime came. Many well-wishers could not get inside as only about a hundred could be accommodated at the ground floor where the President and her party as well as some local officials and some mediamen were hosted for lunch.

Will the ameneng (hataw, video karera) machines finally go for good? We ask because with the high-profile campaign against these illegal gaming machines, with no less than Gov. Victor Agbayani and Mayor Benjamin Lim ordering the police to confiscate these on sight, we can only imagine its operators running in all directions with their machines in tow, putting an end to a vice that have been luring school-aged children.
As of this writing, Dagupan City police chief Ed Basbas was announcing on television that his operatives have already confiscated 31 such machines from the different barangays of the city. Good catch, so far. But we also heard him say that there may be more machines hidden inside many houses and that they would need search warrants to get them.
